Fame UK Tour Review
This week I took a very last minute trip to my local theatre to see the UK Tour of Fame. I found
myself there with a friend because I received an email from my local theatre saying that they were doing tickets for Fame for £5 if you are aged under 25. This felt like an offer not to refuse! But why were the tickets to cheap?
Obviously, I had heard of Fame. But I' relatively young so have never seen the TV series or movie. I didn't really know what the story line was before I went in and I'm still not clear on what the story line is after seeing it. At first glance, the cast looks incredible. Jorgie Porter as Iris Kelly and Mica Paris as Miss Sherman. I'm just going to throw it out there and say that if it wasn't for Mica Paris' rendition of 'These are my children' then I do not think that the show would have been worth seeing. Mica redeemed it.
I'm going to be honest, I can't remember the characters names. There was the Spanish one, the one who rapped and the girl who was desperately in love. None of their songs were particular stand out moments in the show. There were moments when I laughed such as the song about having a boner. But I'm not going to be rushing to download the cast album any time soon.
Obviously, Jorgie Porter was the ticket sales machine. But to be honest she wasn't in the show a great deal. Not when compared with Keith Jack (Nick) and Molly McGuire (Serena). Their story line seemed far more central to the production than Iris'. It sort of felt although Iris' story line is there because they needed someone to be in lobe with Tyrone. When seeing posters for the production I was under the illusion that Jorgie Porter was going to be in the production, a whole great deal more than she really was. Adding to my previous point about story lines, I did not think that the drug overdose death was handled very well. Obviously, anyone dying from a drug overdose is heart breaking. Sadly, it's something that is still happening in society today. It wasn't handled well because it happened to suddenly. One minute Carmen was performing in the college shows, the next, she had died from an
overdose. To me it just didn't flow very well. I wanted to feel sad, I wanted to cry buy I couldn't because I couldn't believe it.
The dancing was amazing. I really did enjoy the production element and the dancing. The ensemble dance numbers really did carry the show. They could all dance and were all outstanding. Them combined with Mica Paris, made the show just about worth going to see.
